Acrylic on Canvas I called this painting 'Entitled' as a reference to their connection to the land and the devotion of ancestral lore and cultural law she puts into her belief.  It is meant to be timeless, yet contemporary. I hope it is a tribute to indigenous people, their relationship with and care of the land and their entitlement to it. Thank you to Toogarr Morrison for his thoughtful comments and advice.

Kate's Dress

Kate's Dress

Acrylic on canvas This painting is a response to a news item I heard on the radio about an old pistol being found walled up in a house that had belonged to Kate Kelly ( Ned’s sister). It was suggested that the pistol was the one that went missing after the incident with Fitzpatrick and that Kate had hidden it all the time. The rifle and pistol in the painting are based on Kelly’s own and the one recently found.

Sticky Lou and the Stitch of Dreams

Sticky Lou and the Stitch of Dreams

Sticky Lou has her genesis in a Noel Christian poem “Hughie and Sticky Lou”. Noel asked me to paint these characters, who inhabit an almost mythical North West, for a poster he was using to promote a PICA performance in 2001. As Sticky Lou took shape in paint ( a generous and determined shape I might add) she demanded a bigger canvas and her own space…lots of it. There are 10 in this series.

The ideas behind this painting are similar to themes I have pursued in other paintings where I place a character from a domestic environment into the natural environment and explore the juxtaposition. I enjoy the whimsy and ambiguity the situation creates, but it is more than a visual joke. Many of us spend our lives in endless, petty, domestic rituals oblivious to the world around us and in Western Australia, one of the least populated areas of the planet, this is particularly ironic.
